Course objectives
The course is focused on the contemporary methodological approaches to the study of the eighteenth-century art and the key issues of its current research. Students will analyze and present selected works of art with respect to their artistic, social, cultural and political context and meanings. The aim of the course is to increase students' competence in the fields of practical application of methodology, conceptual and analytical thinking during work on research projects, and broadening knowledge of current research trends.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- identify the key current issues and topics of the eighteenth-century studies;
- identify, compare and describe current methodological approaches;
- analyse and interpret major developments in the 18th-century art and visual culture;
- develop and present written and oral arguments about his/her own research project.

  • The seminar will be structured around a series of panels focused on particular types of artworks and intertwined particular thematic questions.

  • Art criticism, perception and the "period eye"
  • Gender and feminist perspectives
  • Visual culture of the Neoclassicism

Teaching methods

Assessment methods
Students are required to write a case study and participate in a final group project, orally present their research and attend the class discussion.
