Course objectives
Provide a solid knowledge of Quebec literature, its cultural context and periodization. Provide and develop elements and skills for analyzing and presenting literary texts.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify and summarize important features of Quebec literature;
- identify and characterize the main characters of Quebec poetry, prose and drama;
- write an essay (commentaire composé) comparing 3 outstanding works in this field.

  • I. French period: 1534-1760 II.Political and cultural break: 1760-1837 III.Cultural and literary revival: 1837-1930 IV. On the road to modernity: 1930-1960 V.Quiet Revolution: from modernity to postmodern plurality: 1960-1970 VI.Postmodern openness: feminist literature 1970-1990 VII. Migrant literature: 1980-2000 VIII. Ensauvagement": Amerindian (and Quebecois) authors: 1990-2020 IX. Conclusion: methodological assessment methods of analysis of literary works.

Lecture and seminar devoted to the reading and ananlysis of selected texts. Lecture attendance is obligatory.
