Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce selected features of the Japanese culture in context of the most common cultural stereotypes. The starting point is an analysis of stereotypical cultural concepts that form a part of discourse both within and outside of Japan.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to:
Characterise the discourse on Japanese culture from the historical perspective;
Describe factors that form a specific Japanese cultural identity;
Name some differences between Japanese and european understanding of time and place;
Identify and describe some basic socio-cultural stereotypes in the Japanese environment;
Introduce the main characteristics of traditional Japanese aesthetics;
Situate selected Japanese traditions in the context of the year.

  • 2. Basic sources of Japanese cultural identity
  • 3. Outline of theories on Japanese culture
  • 4. Key concepts of Japanese culture (conception of time, space, uchi/soto, honne/tatemae etc.) 5. Traditional concepts of Japanese esthetics (traditional disciplines, )
  • 6. Food culture
  • 7. Japanese traditions during the year
  • 8. Tradition and myth I: Samurai and bushido
  • 9. Tradition and myth II: Ninja and ninjutsu
