Course objectives
One of the most typical traits of the 19th- and 20th-century Czech culture is the tendency towards idyllicism. The idyll was not only the most popular literary genre of the age, but also a general principle of connecting to the world, as well as a means of escape in dark times. In this series of lectures we shall attempt to present the most typical features of idyll in Czech literature, and marginally in music, film, and visual arts, as well.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the subject, the student shall be able:
- to interpret the most important idylls in world literature,
- to interpret the most important idylls in Czech literature,
- to recognise idyllic elements in a literary text,
- to recognise idyllic elements in music, film, and visual arts.

  • 2. Revivalist idylls and the “Czech cottage”.
  • 3. Idyll in the Máj movement and idyll of the parnasist.
  • 4. Idyll of the realist – an endangered idyll?
  • 5. Idyll in the 1st half of the 20th century.
  • 6. Idyll in the age of “normalisational biedermeier”?
