Course objectives
A brief outline of the history of Polish literature from its beginnings in the 10th century till the late 20th century, emphasizing the development of its nodal points and the most important authors. At the end of this course the student will be able to understand the developmental patterns of Polish literary and cultural history, illustrating them with specific examples and be able to understand the basic literature.

Po absolvování bude student schopen:
- popsat polské literární a kulturní dějiny do roku 1956,
- určit a vysvětlit charakteristické rysy hlavních epoch polské literární historie,
- ilustrovat vývoj polské literatury je na konkrétních příkladech klíčových textů,
- orientovat se v základní odborné literatuře.
Syllabus
  • 1. Middle Ages. The origins of Polish literature. Religious orders and their contribution to cultural development in Poland. Polish medieval historiography, hagiography, and rhetoric. Religious poetry. The Bible and the development of the Polish language. Secular literature.
  • 2. Renaissance. Outline of the cultural history of the period. Poetry of the Early Renaissance poetry. The beginnings of narrative prose. The work of Mikołaj Rej. Rhetorical prose. The work of Jan Kochanowski. The beginnings of the Polish drama. Poetry of the Late Renaissance.P> 3. Baroque. Introduction to Baroque culture and characteristic forms of Baroque literature. Conceptism and marinism. Sarmat authors. Plebeian creation. Late Baroque.
  • 4. Age of Enlightenment. Periodization of the Polish Enlightenment. Saxon period. Stanislavian Age. Classicism and major cultural institutions. Sentimentalism. Work of important Enlightenment authors (Adam Naruszewicz, Ignacy Krasicki, Stanislaw Trembecki, Franciszek Karpinski, Franciszek Dionizy Kniaźnin). Rococo. Enlightenment Theatre and Drama. Jan Potocki and heritage of the Polish Enlightenment. Literary work before the November uprising.
  • 5. Romanticism. Specifics and the center of Polish romanticism. Ukrainian school of Romantics. Life and work of a great romantic authors: Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Slowacki, Zygmunt Krasińského and Cyprian Kamil Norwid. Domestic literature and censorship. Aleksander Fredro and romantic theater.
  • 6. Positivism. The issue of marking period. Controversy with romanticism. The era of realistic novel: Eliza Orzeszkowa, Bolesław Prus, Henryk Sienkiewicz. Naturalism in Poland. The position of poetry in the period of Positivism.
  • 7. Mloda Polska. Dynamics and tendencies of the Polish modernism. The most personal poetry, prose and drama.
  • 8. Inter-war literature. Historical background and the main trends. Poetry groups. The typology of the inter-war prose. Innovators of Polish literature: Witkacy, Witold Gombrowicz and Bruno Schulz.
  • 9. Literature of the World War II and the postwar period (1945–1956). The political and social situation.

Teaching methods
Lectures and class discussion. Compulsory reading and homeworks. Compulsory work with the e-learning environment of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University (ELF).
Assessment methods
Final oral exam (60 pts), midterm test (30 pts, at the end of March/in the beginning of April), active participation (10 pts, if a student have six or more absences, he/she must to submit a seminar paper – 10 pages typed). Compulsory home reading. Evaluation scale: A 100–85, B 84–80, C 79–70, D 69–65, E 64–60, F (fail) 59–0.
