Course objectives
The course outlines the most important religious traditions of the West since the ancient times up to the present day. The main attention is paid to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which have strongly influenced the present forms of the Euro-American civilization. The course also provides an illustrative selection of textual and pictorial sources.
Learning outcomes
After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate the basic factual knowledge of the most important religious traditions of the West;
  • use the basic terminology of the Western religious traditions and their academic study;
  • work criticallly with basic information on Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

    • The ancient gnosis and its followers.
    • Scripture and law in the history of Judaism.
    • The origins and the development of Christianity until the Middle Ages.
    • The development of Christian rituals.
    • Reformation and Counter-Reformation.
    • Transformations of modern Christianity.
    • The rise and the splitting of Islam.
    • Islam and the clash of civilizations?
    • New religious movements.
    • Final test.
