Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present an overview of the contemporary reflection of the so-called new media and to map the key themes that are researched and theorized in this context in social sciences. The course introduces new technologies as a social (socially constructed) phenomenon, defines the position of social constructivism and a critical approach to technology (with emphasis on topics of discourse and ideology), promotes new media studies in the context of media studies and social sciences as such. Furthermore, the course deals with the topics of everyday life, media audiences, space and places, power and politics, community and public, social and technological changes, communication activism, information society, etc.
Learning outcomes
- Ability to get oriented in current debate and research in new media;
- capability to review expert literature and to formulate a theoretical problem;
- addressing and describing general trends in social and cultural transformations linked with new media.
