Course objectives
The main aim is to introduce students key literary works from as much as possible literary periods which are taught at secondary schools. English, American, Russian, German and French literature will be emphasized.
A one-hour lecture regularly comes before each seminar.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able:
- to describe key works of world literature;
- to advocate the position of the works chosen in literary canon of secondary school students;
- to interpret text form the works given;
- to understand the relationship of world and Czech literature.
Syllabus
  • On the concept of world literature: Each semester, lecturers choose 12-14 lecture topics. Students will also be referred to film adaptations. The lecture should motivate the students to try as hard as possible to expand the authentic reading experience. 1. The oldest ancient civilizations (Mesopotamian, Persian, Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Aramaic writing). 2. Greek and Roman literature (Homer, tragedy, comedy). 3. Renaissance and humanism (Italian, French). 4. Renaissance and Humanism II (Spanish, English Renaissance) 5. Classicism, Enlightenment (Corneille, Racine, Voltaire, Defoe, Swift, Molière, Goldoni). 6. Pre-romanticism and romanticism (Goethe, Schiller, Chateaubriand, English (Byron) German (Grimmov)). 7. Romanticism 2 (French (Hugo), Russian (Pushkin), American (Poe)). 8. Realism and naturalism (English (Dickens), French (Balzac, Zola), American (Twain), Russian (Tolstoy, Chekhov, Nordic (Ibsen)). 9. The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries ("damned poets", Whitmann, Apollinaire, Morgenstern, Marinetti, Trakl, Blok). 10. World literature 1914-1939 (surrealism, modernism...; Breton, Proust, Bulgakov, Feuchtwanger). 11. Lost generation, absurd literature. 12. Neorealism, magical realism. 13. Beatniks, postmodernism. 14. Fantasy, crime fiction, young adult, 21st century drama.

Each semester, the teacher selects 12-14 topics from the listed 14 topics. The lecture should motivate the students to try as hard as possible to expand the authentic reading experience. The seminar is preceded by a one-hour lecture, attendance at which is part of the attendance of the course as a whole.
