Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of DAW (digital audio workstation). Interest in recording technology, sound in its wider possible usage, not only musical. There is no required knowledge and familiarity with practice of recording technique.

Course objectives
Students will be introduced to basic technical equipment for capturing and recording sound. Students are supposed to work with DAW. In cooperation with lecturer, students will try to map various contexts of usage of sounds in musical and non-musical space. Minimum of 30 % of lessons will be used for discussions about particular sound based material and its individual/collective adjustments. Students will learn to identify and analyze context of the sound work and also wider context of its constitution and communication. There will be accent on practical sound application in the field (see outline) and on the work with recorded material in DAW. Discussions will also take place on the topic of particular sound applications, general field of sound activities and their place in audio- and audiovisual works and in general on their position in the society.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
have a broader insight into usage of sound in various contexts,
analyze used technological and sound-artistic means,
choose and use particular technological and sound-artistic means regarding to sound and cultural context
Syllabus
  • 1. introduction
  • 2. discussion: Sound Studies
  • 3. discussion + forum: studio work and field work, sound and its applications (phonography, sound interventions, commercial task, location sound, broadcast, sound design, sound system installation/concert etc.)
  • 4. case study: 1kHz
  • 5. forum: money vs. art vs. money+art - searching the sense of sound job, self-fulfillment
  • 6. field: intervention - sound encroachment into the field
  • 7. field: sound at sound system aplications of "popular" music
  • 8. forum: stereotypes of work with sound and their encroachment - "sound mushroom cloud" in TV and radio
  • 9. discussion + forum: "dirty" and "clean record" and rules of world of art in music and sound activities via free interpretation of Pierre Bourdieu's examples from various styles, genres, „scenes"
  • 10. practice: connecting of middle-sized sound systrem - input, aux, capture of sound, playback, record, analog, digital, optics, proccesing, wire/less
  • 11. practice: feedback as an art mean
  • 12. practice: wireless - work with wireless broadcast and its limits/artistic usage of signal with noise
  • 13. reflection of the course + listening to the sound material captured and edited during the course and its analysis

Assessment methods
Requirements for fulfilling are 1. active participation on practical realizations 2. active participation on discussions 3. attendance on at least eight lessons 4. fulfilling one of any of three taks: A. any change of sound track in advertisement 10-60 seconds long B. any change of sound track from movie 10-60 seconds long C. shooting of short visual scene (it is possible to shoot with/out contact sound) and change/production of its sound track, 10-60 seconds long
