Course objectives
Kabuki is often referred to as being kaleidoscopic and kinetic, humorous and humane, grandiose and gotesque at the same time. In other words, it has much to offer to all sorts of spectators. This is an introductory course in which the historical development of Kabuki is traced, and its function in the present Japanese society is discussed. Authentic research materials brought from Tokyo will be at student s disposal.

  • Kabuki is often referred to as being kaleidoscopic and kinetic, humorous and humane, grandiose and gotesque at the same time. In other words, it has much to offer to all sorts of spectators. This is an introductory course in which the historical development of Kabuki is traced, and its function in the present Japanese society is discussed. Authentic research materials brought from Tokyo will be at student s disposal.
