Course objectives
In the course, I will focus on the following issues: What do universals tell us about language and its properties? What causes cross-linguistic variation? Is the number of natural languages bound or infinite? What exactly do languages differ in?
Syllabus
  • Universals and variation - word order - Case and Burzio s generalization - locality and island effects - antilocality: pro drop, that-t effect and postverbal subjects - ordering of adjectives and left branch extraction - prepositional phrase - noun phrase - verbal phrase - multiple subject constructions - anaphora.
