  • Development of Czech cinematography between 1945 and 1957 This class belongs to the cycle of overview lectures on history of Czech and foreign cinematography. The period between 1945 and 1957 follows traditional periods of the development of Czech film, primarily dependent on political history. The period starts at the end of WWII, or more precisely during nationalization of Czechoslovak cinematography and ends by excepting results of 20th rally of the Soviet Communist Party, or by presence of morally critical tone in works from that period. The presented period includes two specific cultural-historical stages divided by the communist takeover but both periods carry signs of a strong ideological concept. The lecture aims at general survey into the development of cinematography in the given period from the structurally changes in the film field, over socially political situation which shaped character of dramaturgy controlled by state. It also focuses on the contemporary film criticism and film production of the pre-war authors, e.g. Otakar Vávra, Martin Frič, Václav Krska, Václav Wasserman and new emerging directors, e.g. Alfréd Radok, Jiří Weiss, Jiří Krejčík, Karel Steklý, Bořivoj Zeman, Vojtěch Jasný etc. Part of the lecture will be devoted also to production of puppet and combined films.
