Course objectives
The course seeks to acquaint the art history student with the basic styles and architects, working in the Renaissance, i.e. in the 15th Century in Italy.
Syllabus
  • 1. The "Renaissance" in the architecture. & 2. The "capomaestro", "ingegnere", and the patron (the "collective architect" in Italy of the 15th Century. & 3. Leon Bat. Alberti and the birth of an architect. & 4. The Italian quattrocento and the shaping of the architectural space. & 5. Filippo Brunellesco - first modern architect? & 6. The architectural task in the italian Renaissance I: the memorial-burial chapel. & 7. Michelozzo di Bartolomeo and the decorative architecture. & 8. Alberti and classical architecture. & 9. The architectural task in the italian Renaissance II: the town palace. & 10. Theory of the human proportions and the Renaissance architecture. & 11. The architectural task in the italian Renaissance III: the "villa". & 12. The feast, utopia and the ephemeral architecture. & 13. Leonardo, Bramante and the northern Italian architecture (the visual effects). &
