The lecture is meant for those interested in Medieval Latin literature. Knowledge of Latin is not required.

Course objectives
Latin literature of the Czech Middle Ages from its beginnings (10th century) to the end of the period (to the times of Iohannes Hus and partly the Hussite movement). Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows: to define individual genres of the Latin Bohemian literature; to describe their connections to the development of Latin literature in Europe, as well as to the contemporary Old Czech literature; to explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature. The course is divided into two parts. At the end of the second part, the students should be familiar with history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia to the end of the 14th century.

  • 2. Biography and autobiography.
  • 3. Historiography.
  • 4. Education and didactic literature.
  • 5. Question of the so-called protohumanism.
  • 6. Sermons.
  • 7. Entertainment literature. Exempla. Books of travels.
  • 8. Secular poetry.
  • 9. Sacred lyric (hymns, sequences, tropes, cantilenas).
  • 10. "Drama".
  • 11. Devotional and mystical literature.
  • 12. Scholarly literature.
