Course objectives
The aim of the course to introduce students to a range of narrative-stylistic devices in contemporary Czech comic strip versions of literary works. The seminar will include comparing literary models with their comics versions; drawing conclusions about the degree of literariness left in this intersemiotic genre; producing and analysing the student's own comics adaptation of a literary work of their choice. Students will be able to appraise new comics versions of literature.

  • 1. The nature of comics art.
  • 2. Dissimilarities and similarities in the narrative means of comics and literature.
  • 3. The function of the verbal component of comics.
  • 4. The symmetry of the graphic and verbal components in comics adaptions of literature.
  • 5. The range of contemporary comic strip versions of literary works.
  • 6.- 8. Comparing selected literary models with their comics versions.
  • 9.-10. Producing the student's own comics adaptation.
