Course objectives
At the end of this course the students will be able to:
- enlarge their knowledge about Old Czech Literature;
- deepen their knowledge primary literature sources and get acquainted with special sources;
- interpret Old Czech literary texts on the basis of contemporary ethic and social rules;
- work with the Bible as a prototext of the religious educational literature;
- apply the achieved knowledge and skills in order to write scholarly texts on related topics;
The course is based on reading and interpretation of selected texts showing the apocryphal matter used. Students are supposed to look on the uprise and evolution of the apocryphe in the Christian tradition. The focus will be above all devoted in the apocryphe entrance to the older Czech literature and its functions. The selected texts take into account both the evolutional aspect (the mediaeval, humanism and baroque literature) and also the broad genre approach.
Syllabus
  • - the basic scholarly terminology with regards to apocryphe;
  • - the uprise, evolution and specifics of apocryphal texts in the context of European literature and in Old Czech literature;
  • - the characteristics and definition of the apocryphe matter and its place in the literature;
  • - the Bible as an proto-text, the work with biblical references in the text;
  • - religious educational literature and the function of apocryphes in this kind of literature;
  • - the apocryphe in the popular readings and semi-popular writings, the influence of apocryphes over iconography;

Teaching methods
Work with texts (with the use of analytical-synthetic method) is emphasized in seminars. Interpretation of texts are realized as collective tasks in seminars.
Assessment methods
Credits are obtained on the basis of active work in seminars and a seminars work.
