Course objectives
The intention of the course is to create conditions for an interdisciplinary debate on nature, functions and reception of art in a situation, which locates literature in the context of culture referred to as visual or multimedia, i. e. in the position of one of numerous media. Thus, the work of literature remains the main subject of inquiry as a product at the intersection of intermedia relations. The methodologic basis is created by current codifications of intermediality (by Wolf and Rajewski in particular) supported by semiotics, narrative theory as well as knowledge of visual and film studies. As a result, the class is intended not only for students of literature, but also those involved in film and media studies, aesthetics or art history. A survey of theory and (pre)history of interart and intermedia studies is an indispensable part of the course.

Knowledge and faculties/competencies acquired:
- Students will acquire a general competence of interdisciplinary communication, i.e. the ability of enunciating problems of inquiry into art in a manner plausible and inspiring also for representatives of other disciplines.
- Students will acquire a sum of preconditions for reflection of a work of art not only in the context of the art concerned but also within the discourse of media, and as a result, a sum of arguments in favour of specific qualities of art forms (including the seemingly “outdated” ones) and modes of their reception.
- The intermediality as a methodology will provide students with the competence of identifying and classifying intermedia phenomena, but also with preconditions for an innovative interpretation of a work of art both in its relations to other arts or in inquiring into parallel representations of phenomena surpassing the intermedia scope, such as cultural construction of identity.
Syllabus
  • The selection of the texts and works to be analyzed is (due to the short run of the course) subject to explicit manifestation of individual aspects of intermediality, thus, aspects of diachronic or culture representation can not be taken into consideration. Individual discussions will involve both analyses of fragments of works and complex interpretation. The intermedia phenomena to be observed include e.g.
  • - intermedia reference (pictorial models and ekphrasis in narrative in works by e.g. Arbes, Urban or Nabokov)
  • - transmedia nature of story (as observed in narrative genres such as serials or in visual arts, particularly photography)
  • - media interference or simulation (the influence of impressionist technique on style, such as in V. Woolf´works) etc.

Teaching methods
Classwork methods generally: semiotic analysis of a work of art and its cultural and historical contextualization, in particular: stylistic and poetologic analysis of literary text, narratological analysis of an audiovisual product (such as film or TV series), iconological analysis of a work of visual art, all involving cognitive aspects of reception; analytic approach will be employed during the class discussion, its necessary precondition being previous reception of the works of art intended to be analyzed ( i.e. reading texts, watching films etc.), in some cases, acquiring theoretical knowledge in advance will be necessary.
Assessment methods
active participation in class discussions, alternatively students´ own analysis either presented in the class discussion or written after the run of the course.
