Course objectives
The course will focus on rethinking the traditional understanding of the famous Czech new wave, by which is usually meant a small group of several directors with a distinctive auteur style. The lectures will concentrate on more precise definition of the "new wave" in the context of the Czech cinema in the sixties (the origin, the content and the development ot the term "new wave"). We will also focus on a recognition of the characteristic traits of new wave aesthetics in particular films. We will concentrate maily on films, which were influenced by the new wave aesthetics but which are not considered as key works of the Czech new wave. The lectures will be accompanied by a set of screenings.

Selected filmography:
Anděl blažené smrti (Štěpán Skalský, 1965), Finský nůž (Zdenek Sirový, 1965), Máte doma lva? (Pavel Hobl, 1963), Místenka bez návratu (Dušan Klein / Miroslav Sobota, 1964), Okurkový hrdina (Čestmír Mlíkovský, 1963), První den mého syna (Ladislav Helge, 1964), Svatba s podmínkou (Pavel Kohout, 1965), Svatej z Krejcárku (Petr Tuček, 1969), Třiatřicet stříbrných křepelek (Antonín Kachlík, 1964), Vražda ing. Čerta (Ester Krumbachová, 1970).

The main aims:
