Course objectives
The seminar will take heed of the religious educational creation, which was meant for Czech national reader, especially in 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It will show its most frequent genres and via them also the way of fostering of national religiousness of this epoch.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- use the information about the genre system of the literature in the baroque period;
- characterize the religious educational writing and its functions;
- be familiar with specialized literature and methodology;
- be able to interpret the chosen texts;
- work with basic findings and methodological procedures.
Syllabus
  • The aim of the seminar will be to present the religious educational production, especially the one of the baroque period, its roots, genres and functions which it followed. The seminar will especially devote to these topics:
  • - the religious educational literature and its functions;
  • - the role of the Bible and its derived texts;
  • - the picture of the world in religious encyclopedias;
  • - catechismes and related texts, their literary treatment;
  • - religious polemics;
  • - the pilgrimage and its literary reflection;
  • - the prayer and its use in the religious educational production;
  • - the cantastoria as a mediator of the education to piousness.
