Course objectives
The aim of the course is to get the students oriented in the texts of medieval Latin and bilingual plays originating in the Czech lands. At the end of the course, the students will be able to understand and translate the Latin text with help of grammar tables and dictionaries.

The students are first to be acquainted with the main features of the medieval Latin and its functions ithin the medieval society (especially the Czech lands). The most weight is put on reading and translating the texts; the students are to be explained the elementary grammar and morphology of the medieval Latin to such extent so that they were able to read and translate the texts with help of grammar tables and dictionaries, assisted by the teacher.
Syllabus
  • 1. Medieval Latin I - chronology, area, functions.
  • 2. Medieval Latin II - features (esp. elementary morfology and syntaxis guide).
  • 3. The sources for "Visitatio sepulchri" scene in Gospels - explanation of the reading methods employed during the course.
  • 4.-6. "Svatojiřské oficium" - general info, reading.
  • 7.-9. "Plays of the three Marys" - general info, reading.
  • 10.-11. Other Latin and Latin-Czech medieval plays: "Mastičkář", "The Play of Cheerful Magdalene", "Plancti of the Virgin Mary".
  • 12. Latin inscriptions on the 14th-century artefacts from the Czech lands (paintings, aedifices, illuminated manuscripts, etc).
