Course objectives
The concepts introduced in this course should help to answer the question "why poeple sometimes cannot force themselves to do things which they need to do, are able to do, and even want to do", as well as to outline potential improvement strategies. The students will learn about concepts directly applicable in their own lives.
Syllabus
  • Practical implications of various motivational theories: Procrastination. Motives, needs, values, goals. Expectancy x value theories. Temporal motivation theory. Implicit/explicit motives. Achievement motivation and achievement goals. Self-efficacy. Irrational beliefs. Avoidant behaviour. Attributions. Ego-defensive strategies. Self-handicapping. Impulsiveness and delay of reward. Emotion regulation. Regulation and self-regulation in pursuing long-term goals. Mindsets and implementation intentions. Self-regulatory depletion. Top-down and bottom-up processing in behaviour regulation. Structured and non-structured tasks. Intrinsic/extrinsic motivation. Self-determination and autonomy. Psychological reactance.

Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussion, application using self-assessment methods. A moodle course will be opened in the ELF.
Assessment methods
A self-observation-based portfolio supplemented with theoretical interpretations will be discussed during an oral exam at the end of the semester. Student will also write a short theoretical test.
