Course objectives
The seminar is aimed at developing basic skills important for creating professional texts of different genres, especially final dissertations, essays and studies. This course is meant to be a catalogue of methods and techniques for individual stages in writing academic texts. It is concerned with creative as well as technical and organizational aspects of academic work.
At the end of this course, students should be able:
to use correct methods and techniques in individual stages of academic writing;
to create definitions of terms of their subject field;
to understand different academic genres;
to interpret communicative function of different academic genres;
to create communicative texts of different academic genres.

  • Selection of exercises and techniques:
  • looking for a theme,
  • forming an assignment,
  • forming a hypotheses,
  • creating an outline,
  • planning the work,
  • the chronological axis,
  • rewording, shortening, cutting, methods of critical evaluation,
  • collective revision
  • work with the primary literature,
  • collecting and working with secondary literature,
  • principles of quoting,
  • fine art techniques in academic work.
