- Course objectives
- Upon successful participation in the excursion to Rome the students will be familiar with the main Roman monuments in Rome and the nearest neighbourhood. They will see the main archeological sites, acquire a specific knowledge about the form and shape of the Urbs Roma in Antiquity. They will be able to recognize, describe and comment visited monuments.
- Syllabus
- Friday, 2 October. At 6:20 departure from Brno by bus, arrival at Vienna Airport at 8:40. Departure from Vienna at 12:00, expected arrival at Rome Fiumicino at 13:40. Accomodation; evening stroll in the city centre (depending on time available): Piazza Barberini – Fontana di Trevi – Piazza di Spagna – Monte Pincio.
- Saturday, 3 October. Colosseum – Palatinus – Forum Romanum – the Imperial Fora – Trajan's Column – S. Maria in Aracoeli - the Capitoline Hill – the Capitoline Museums.
- Sunday, 4 October. The Pyramid of C. Cestius - Ancient Ostia.
- Monday, 5 October. Vatican Museums - St. Peter's Basilica - the Janiculum Hill (Acqua Paola).
- Tuesday, 6 October. The Republican Roman temples of via Botteghe Oscure and Largo di Torre Argentina – S. Andrea della Valle – Campo dei Fiori – Museo Barracco – Piazza Navona - the Pantheon – S. Maria sopra Minerva – Piazza di Pietra (the Temple of Hadrian) – Piazza Montecitorio (the obelisk) – Piazza Colonna (the Column of Marcus Aurelius) – the Mausoleum of Augustus – Ara Pacis – Piazza del Popolo – Museo di Villa Giulia (optionally the Castle of the Holy Angel).
- Wednesday, 7 October. Option 1: S. Maria degli Angeli e Martiri – Fontana del Mosè – S. Maria della Vittoria – Museo Nazionale (Terme di Diocleziano+Palazzo Massimo) // Option 2: S. Agnese Fuori le Mura (catacombs), the mausoleum of S. Costanza – Porta Pia – Piazza Sallustio (Horti Sallustiani) – S. Maria della Vittoria – Fontana del Mosè – S. Maria degli Angeli e Martiri – together: S. Maria Maggiore – Arcus Gallieni – Porta Maggiore (the Tomb of Eurysaces the Baker) – „the Temple of Minerva Medica“ – Trajan's Market – stroll along the Quirinal Hill (Via delle Quattro Fontane).
- Thursday, 8 October. The Baths of Caracalla – the Tomb of the Scipios – Arcus Drusi and Porta San Sebastiano – Via Appia (S. Sebastiano, the Villa of Maxentius, the Tomb of Caecilia Metella)
- Friday, 9 October. S. Giovanni in Laterano+baptistery – S. Stefano Rotondo – Arcus Dolabellae – Circus Maximus – Forum Boarium (S. Maria in Cosmedin, the temples of Portumnus and Hercules Victor) – Velabrum (Ianus Quadrifons, Arcus Argentariorum) – Forum Holitorium (S. Nicola in Carcere – underground excavations), Area Sacra di Sant’Omobono – Theatrum Marcelli and the Temple of Apollo Sosianus – Porticus Octaviae – the Tiber Island – Trastevere.
- Saturday, 10 October. Departure to the airport in the early morning; departure from Rome at 9:35, expected arrival at Vienna at 11:10; from Vienna by bus at 13:00, expected arrival at Brno at 15:30.
