Course objectives
Art historical approaches, which are ingested for analysis and interpretation of architectural works, will be discussed and practiced during the tutorial.
The prerequisite for the completion is the acquisition of basic knowledge of the bachelor course Introduction to Art History I - Architecture (those who come from other undergraduate studies, it is recommended to study the basic materials in e-learning).
The aim of course in Master's program is get knowledge of basic concepts in history of architecture and learn to use them in the most diverse cases by analyzing architectural objects.
Syllabus
  • 1. The form and material in architecture: principle of tectonic, principle of stereotomy, stereotomic illusion.
  • 2. Aesthetics of volumen, stereometry, element disposition.
  • 3. Visual significance: the opportunity to shape, form of highness.
  • 4. Analysis and interpretation of forms.

  • 5. Space: spatial sensation, spatial effects.
  • 6. Architectural space in "Brno school of art history": the spatial concept, space and place.
  • 7. Space and metaphorical epithets: additive-divisive, closed-open; finite-infinite.
  • 8. Description of spatial units in historical architecture - travé, united space, directed, segmented and compartmentalized; anthropocentrically space, the room units, etc.
  • 9. Description of spatial units in modern architecture: spatial plan (Raumplan), free plan (plan libre), flowing space, open space.
