Course objectives

An overview of the history of Polish literature from 1918 till 1956. The course contains information about the period, the literary epochs, trends, schools and authors, with an analysis of genres and specific works and also leads toward a knowledge of written forms of expression within the given issues. Main aims of the course are:
- to understand development of the Polish literature of that period;
- to understand the most prominent representatives of the Polish literature of inter-war, World War II and post-war years;
- to understand Polish literature as an integrative part of the building the national consciousness;
- to become familiar with an essential amount of scientific literature and its methods;
- to work with the secondary literature creatively;
- to apply acquired knowledge and skills on the creation of own scientific texts.

Syllabus

• 1. The characteristics of the period between 1918 and 1939 and increasing of contacts with other European literatures.
• 2.-4. The developement of Polish inter-war poetry.
• 5.-8. The developement of Polish inter-war prose.
• 9. Polish inter-war drama.
• 10. Situation of the Polish literature during the World War II.
• 11.-12. Ideology and Socialist realism after the World War II and the political “thaw” after 1953.

Teaching methods

Lectures are combined with seminars (analysis o chosen literaty texts, class disscusion), reading of reccomended literature.

Assessment methods

Completion: complusory written exam (60 points), seminar paper (15 points), oral exam (25 points). Pass/fail line: 60 points.
Students have to gain a credit before an exam (attendance - three absences are allowed, home reading, homeworks, presentation of the seminar paper).
