Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Christian ideology, historical evolution of the Church and changes in its organizational structure, rough orientation in the building-historical, artistic and sacral material culture and also in the historical geography of Europe and the Middle East.

Course objectives
Familiarization of students with individual medieval ecclesiastical orders (especially Catholic Christianity, including Knight´s), species and their substantial construction output. Taken into account at the same time as the monastic buildings (and religious), strength and economic and operational structures. Especially attention will be paid to torsional and defunct structures that have undergone archaeological and other research.

  • 1/ Friary life and its development 2/ Groups of orders and their structure and character 3/ The so-called colonization orders and their functions 4/ Mendicant orders and their functions 5/ Knights' (military) orders and connection with crusades 6/ Order states 7/ The other orders 8/ Monasteries, their forms and modifications 9/ Economic operations (courts, grangies etc.) 10/ Commendes and church castles and fortified houses 11/ Towns and market-town 12/ The monasteries of the Eastern Churches
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars with abundant computer presentations.
Assessment methods
Colloquium - Preparation of a brief paper on a selected topic will be supplemented with questions to find the basic overview. Rating passed / failed.
