Course objectives
This semester's course will focus solely on the work of the singer-songwriter as poet Bob Dylan. The aim of the course will be to analyse aspects of his work, both individual songs and albums, from historical and contemporaneous, including performative and biographical, perspectives. Participants completing the course will be expected to have provided a pertinent written analysis of the nature and significance of some of these aspects and to have contributed to a meaningful oral discussion of comparable elements during the teaching stage of the course.
Learning outcomes
Participants completing the course will be expected to have achieved a greater familiarity with Dylan's life and work in general, in its various aspects, but (quite regardless of any formal knowledge of music, of which I have none) also with relations between the verbal and musical elements of the love and other forms of lyric and developments of both the musical and socio-political as well as communal and personal elements in Dylan's re-working, to a degree of unusual perceptual clarity, of various traditional strands in the relevant elements of the relevant British Isles and American song writing and performing tradition.
