Course objectives
This seminar focuses on the problem of Greek cultural and national identity, which is at the center of discussions among intellectuals dealing with competing narratives converning the formation and the history of the Modern Greek nation. I shall try to outline the main positions and arguments of historians and social scientists, also drawing on the ideas of writers, poets and artists, as well as of philosophers and theologians participating in current debates. I am interested in elucidating alternative conceptions of “Greekness” appealed to, tacitly or explicitly, in a variety of writings, especially of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a view to exploring their philosophical and ideological presuppositions and to assessing their political implications.
