Course objectives
The course provides an overview of the most important religious traditions of the East from their beginnings to nowadays. It is focused on Buddhism in China, Japan and Tibet, Hinduism and Shinto in Japan as well as Konfucianism and Daoism. Lectures are richly accompanied by visual material as well as literary sources.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
  • Define elementary concepts of Buddhism in Tibet;
  • Define elementary concepts of Buddhism in Japan;
  • Define elementary concepts of Buddhism in China;
  • Define elementary concepts of Hinduism;
  • Define elementary concepts of Shinto in Japan;
  • Define elementary concepts Konfucianism;
  • Define elementary concepts Daoism;
  • Understand and explain the most important religious traditions of the East.
    • Syllabus
    • Hinduism: Artificial religion. Origin of Hinduism as the World religion, social and historical context.
    • Buddha: Life and teaching; the life of the founder of the religion.
    • Cycle of rebirth: Bhavachakra. Basic Buddhist concept of the world.
    • Konfucianism and Daoism; the oldest religious-philosophical system in traditional China.
    • Buddhism in China; its role in China culture, history and society
    • Shinto; the oldest religious-philosophical system in traditional Japan; traditional Japan mythology and its deities.
    • Buddhism in Japan; its role in Japon culture, history and society (Nara, Heian and Kamakura periods; 7th-14th century).
    • Joga and tantra. Philosophical tradition of the yoga and tantric world view.
