Course objectives
The 'Kaiserchronik', anonymously written after 1147, came down to us in many manuscripts and is considered to be the earliest vernacular text that chronicles the history of the Roman Empire from the founding of Rome to the time of Emperor Konrad III. But what idea of historiography does it contain? The 'Kaiserchronik' claims for itself to tell the truth, but the chronicle also includes innumerable legends and myths of very different origins. In the seminar this particular text, which is located at the interface between historiography and fictional literature, will be analyzed in detail. In doing so, we will address problems of the tradition and genre of the text as well as the specific narration of history in the 12th century.
Syllabus
  • I would like to hold the seminar in two or three longer sessions. First, I will introduce into the tradition and the text in general and then start the reading. I would like to put a special focus on the depiction of the emperors to shed light on the relationship between history and fiction. In a further block the characterization of Dietrich of Bern and the Nibelungs is to be used for a comparison. In the last section, the different editions of the 'Kaiserchronik' will be examined in order to illustrate the adaptation to changing needs of the recipients.
