Course objectives
The course presents all indigenous language families of North, Central and South America, various models of their genetic classification and some of their grammatical systems. Students should be able to understand the specific ethno- and glottogonic processes characteristic for America in both past and present.
Syllabus
  • 1. Entry of a modern humans in the American supercontinent. 2. Discovery of America in the historical time. 3. Survey and discussion of the most important models of classification of the indigenous languages of America (Sapir, Greenberg, Leščiner). 4. Chosen language families in a more detailed perspektive: 4.1. Eskaleutan; 4.2. Nadene; 4.3. Algonquin; 4.4. Iroquéz; 4.5. Hoka; 4.6. Penuti; 4.7. Uto-Aztec; 4.8. Maya; 4.9. Qečua-Aymara; 4.10. Tupí-Guaraní. 5. Chosen mythological systems.

Teaching methods
Linguistic, anthropological, geographical introduction of a teacher, followed by student's descriptions of individual languages according to their choice.
Assessment methods
Output is based on the oral and written presentation of the grammatical system of a chosen language.
