- Course objectives
- The course presents folk and everyday culture as an autonomous culture as well as a valuable part of history and present. Students get acquainted with the Balkan ethnocultural traditions, their sources, formation and manifestations from the period of the national emancipation to the present. They acquire basic ethnologic terminology and learn to differentiate between various ethnologic interpretational approaches and theories. Students verify the acquired knowledge through the research on the persistence of ethnocultural folk traditions in families with ancestors from the Balkans and in associations of the Balkan minorities in Czechia. At the end of the course students should be able to: describe the traditional society and culture of the Balkans cultural area, explain their specifics in relation to the Mediterranean and in comparison with Europe.

- lectures, class discussion, literature study, presentations of papers, field research, survey report
- Assessment methods
- Written exam: min. 60%. Prerequisites for the exam: homework; students of Balkan studies: field research report. For non-attendance (more then 4 times) more difficult exam; minimal attendance 50 %. Student’s exchanges abroad, university events (excursions, lectures by foreign lecturers) are not included.
