Students should be interested in this topic. Knowledge of South Slavonic languages is not requested - study texts will be available in Czech and English translation.

Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the development of South Slavic comics since the end of the First World War until the beginning of the 21st century. Key names, works and milestones of the history of the comic art in South Slavic region will be introduced to students.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course student will be able to understand the situation of the comic art in the culture of Slavic Balkan countries.

  • 1) Theoretical introduction - basic terminology, possibilities of comics study, overview of study literature
  • 2) Andrija Maurović and the beginnings of the South Slavic comics
  • 3) Comics in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia
  • 4) Partisan comics
  • 5) The "Novi Kvadrat" group
  • 6) Intermezzo I: Zagor, Alan Ford and the Italian comics success in the SFRY
  • 7) Novi Sad comics group
  • 8) Short history of the Bulgarian comics
  • 9) Civil war in Yugoslavia in the comics
  • 10) Intermezzo II: Civil war in Yugoslavia in the foreign comics
  • 11) Nebojša vs. Daredevil – South Slavic comics superheroes
  • 12) Danijel Žeželj and "comics noir"
  • 13) Fanzines and magazines – Q strip, Komikaze, Stripburger, Darko Macan
  • 14) Dubravko Mataković's generation and nowadays Croatian comics

Teaching methods
Lectures, home reading, class discussion, oral presentation.
Assessment methods
Course is based both on lectures and seminars. For seminars solid home preparation (reading of study literature, fulfilling the tasks given), active participation (discussion) and regular attendance (max. 3 absences) is required. Student also must complete one of the following tasks:
- presentation of paper on the topic connected to theory of comics, history of South Slavic comics or interpretation of South Slavic comics, - translation of comics for study purposes, - submission of seminar paper (5 standard pages) - interpretation essay on selected South Slavic comics.
