Course objectives
The aim of the course of Semantics is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of general semantic problems such as the definition and explanation of basic terms (semantics, semiology, semiotics, onomasiology, semasiology, sign: significant, signifies, signification, denotate, predication, argument, intension and extension. In the synchronic part several aspects of the lexical-semantic transcription are illustrated. Other problems will be mentioned marginally – vagueness of meaning, strictness of meanings, stereotypes, polysemy meanings, idiomatic phrases, onomatopoeic words, attributive and non-attributive character of signs. We shall describe different theories and classification of semantic changes from a diachronic as well as a synchronic point of view. We shall analyze different categories of lexical-semantic description (synonymous, antonymous, polysemy and homonymic relation between the words). Students should be able to define basic terms of a linguistic discipline in question.
