Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide basic orientation in both theoretical and practical problems of history of music before early 15th century and to create the qualification for analytical and critical work with sources, repertory, special literature and sounding music.
Learning outcomes
After the finishing of the course VH_801a the student must be able: to provide basic orientation in both theoretical and practical, problems of music history and to create the qualification for analytical and critical work with sources, repertory, special literature and sounding music.
Syllabus
  • The subject of this course is made up by following thematic spheres: 1) Music of the antique
  • 2) Liturgical and paraliturgical monophony of the latin church
  • 3) Secular monophony
  • 4) Origins and early stage of polyphony, Ars antiqua
  • 5) Ars nova
  • 6) Music theory of middle-ages

Lectures with musical examples.
Assessment methods
Oral exam verificated the measure of the orientation in music history and its periodisation, knowledge of main genres, forms and types of medieval music, knowledge of cultural and philosophical contexts of this historical period, knowledge of most significant names of the medieval music, knowledge of sources and present state of research,special literature and main editions.
