Prerequisites
- No prior knowledge of Chinese is needed.
- The course is offered exclusively to the students of the Chinese Department of Masaryk University.
- Exceptions could be made if an Erasmus student has Chinese Studies as their major at their home university and if the student can present documented proof. Language proficiency certificates (HSK/TOCFL) are NOT accepted.

Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- form simple sentences in written and spoken Chinese;
- understand simple speech by a native speaker of Chinese;
- read a simple text.
Learning outcomes
After the course, the student should be able to:
- understand the difference between the spoken and written varieties of Chinese;
- use new grammatical structures;
- answer basic questions and to create basic sentences;
- react properly in basic dialogue on textbook topics.
Syllabus
  • This course (Chinese I) uses Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1 (Lesson 1-10; i.e., 10 lessons + 3 review weeks), following the order of the textbook's lessons.

Teaching methods
The course is taught by a native speaker who combines various methods of teaching - seminars, class discussion, conversation, homework, written/oral presentations, etc.
Assessment methods
Final written exam (passing grade: 70%).
In addition to the test, the following rules must be observed:
1) Up to 4 absences are allowed in one semester. In case of 5 or more absences, the student will not be allowed to sit for the final exam.
2) The student needs to fulfill all the tasks given by the teacher (assignments, presentations, etc.) Unpreparedness is judged as absence.
3) Students must not switch study groups, unless the teacher explicitly approved.
