Course objectives
This course is designed based on the principle of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), where students learn a subject and a second language at the same time. The course aims to equip students with:
- a critical attitude to cultural differences,
- analytical framework of communication across cultures,
- opportunities to discuss typical cases of cultural differences,
- compentence in mediating between cultures.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- examine norms, values, beliefs, and social practices.
- recognize linguistic and attitudinal barriers to intercultural communication.
- master skills and strategies to foster intercultural communication competence.

  • 22.9. Course overview. Hybrid teaching with NCKU.
  • 29.9. Intercultural communication in the global village: enjoy more leisure time-tea, coffee, beer and wines. Synchronous co-teaching with NCKU, hybrid.
  • 6.10. Intercultural communication in the global village: cultural conceptualization and intercultural communication; language and culture in globalization (Ch. 10-11 of Sharifian 2017); mediation in intercultural communication from the CEFR perspective.

  • 24.11. Cultural elements and metaphor in political discourse (cont.); Russian-Chinese pidgin (as a result of cultural contact).
  • 1.12. Time, tense across languages and cultures; Chinese-Czech menus in comparison and contrast; swearing and its emotional/communicative functions in different cultures; LIFE across cultures (Huang 2021 in Hans-Georg ed. 2021, Yu and Jia 2016; Yu 2017) and DEATH across cultures (Lu 2017, 2020a, 2020b).

Teaching methods
Four seminars in hybrid form (co-taught with Dr. Sunglin Chen of National Chengkung University), the rest taught in person; online and in-person discussion in Chinese; most readings in English.
Assessment methods
Two absences tolerateed; a written summary of online discussion with NCKU students (in Chinese, 1 page, uploaded to the IS by 11 February).
