Course objectives
The main objective of this course is to present material culture of the Roman world (from the early iron age to the late antiquity, i.e. from the 1st millenium B.C. to the 5th century A.D. Part of the course will include introduction of construction and production processes of artefacts and possibilities of their advanced study using modern analytical methods. In the practical part of the course students should test out their knowledge on the archeological materials in the deposits of our Institute, or in the collections of other institutions.
Learning outcomes
After successfull passing the course, students will be able to:
- recognize, classify, describe and primary documentate individual artifacts
- orientate within the basic terminology and dating methods – direct or formal (typology and classification)
- elaborate a professional catalog entry of the artefact in the form of a protocol, including data on formal and metrical determination, pictural documentation and bibliography for its classification and systematic
- determine an ideal interdisciplinary approach to advanced artifact analysis
- understand the processes and construction of the artefact and their manufacturing according to the concept of chaîne opératoire

  • 1. Introduction - definition of the topic, main systematics, terminology and reading
  • 2. General characteristics and classifications of the Roman material culture, formal analytical methods of the artefacts
  • 3. Pre-Roman and early Roman material culture
  • 4. Basic types and forms of the Roman pottery, Roman fine ware and terra sigillata (Samian ware)
  • 5. Pottery manufacturing processes - methods of shaping, decorating and firing, Roman coarse ware and amphorae
  • 6. Lamps, terracotta figurines and ceramic building materials
  • 7. Roman glass - history of glass making, cast and glass-forming techniques, characteristic glass products, workshops and trade
  • 8. Roman jewellery and personal adornment
  • 9. Roman toreutics
  • 10. Roman tools, instruments and varia
  • 11. Roman coinage
  • 12. Visit of institutional depository to see the original finds, selection of artifacts for elaboration a protocol, obtaining of descriptive data and primary documentation

Active participation and the presence on the courses are required, identification of selected artifacts and elaboration of a protocol in the form of a catalog entry with the primary photographic documentation or archaeological illustration of the artefact.
