Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to provide students with basic research procedures focusing on applicability in the LIS field. The topics discussed are the basic chapters of the research methodology. Students should understand the importance of science and research with a focus on LIS, but also how information institutions support research in other fields.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the meaning and basic principles of science and research;
- define the role of the library in supporting science and research;
- compare different research methods;
- understand the results of disciplinary research published in a professional article or research report;
- critically evaluate research and the methodology used;
- plan and conduct their own research.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to methodology. Research and paradigms in ISK.
  • 2. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research. Research variables and levels of measurement. Operationalization of variables.
  • 3. Types of research. Approaches in qualitative and quantitative design. Specific research designs.
  • 4. Quality of method and methodology. Measurement errors. Validity and reliability.
  • 5. Research questions and hypotheses. Hypothesis testing.
  • 6. Research sample and data collection.
  • 7. Ethics in research Codes of ethics.
  • 8. Research report. IMRaD. Peer-review.
  • 9. Indirect measurement. Scaling and questionnaire design.
  • 10. Methodological errors and biases.

Teaching methods
Lectures, discussion, reading.
Assessment methods
Written test. The test contains 20 closed questions (1 correct answer each time) and 5 open questions. No points are deducted for a wrong answer, 1 point is given for a correct answer.
The following scale is used for evaluation:
24-25 points = A;
21-23 points = B;
18-20 points = C;
15-17 points = D;
12-14 points = E;
0-11 points = F.
