Course objectives
This course provides theoretical and practical information regarding current processes for building dictionaries and lexical databases. The topic is covered from the point of view of a linguist-lexicographer, preparing dictionary entry with the use of computational language materials (building the word list, selecting lexical unit, definition of the headword, grammatical information, word usage in natural context based on corpus evidence, processing context and collocations). The course covers technical issues of dictionary building (designing the edit form, converting data to XML, browsing and editing tools). In a project, students build their own dictionaries using the described tools, data and processes.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able:
- know current trends in lexicography;
- use the right software tools to acquire and create lexicographic data;
- design the appropriate dictionary structure;
- create definitions and dictionary entries.
