Course objectives
The aims of this seminar are: 1. to introduce core principles of the generative theory of Distributed Morphology 2. to provide an analysis of selected Czech data within the framework of this theory
Syllabus
  • - morphological component (syntax - Spell Out - PF) - concept of a morpheme: Sausserian vs. roots and functional morphemes - late insertion into terminal nodes of syntactic structure: separation of form and meaning - items stored in the morphological component (Vocabulary Items): their phonological form and their (under)specification for contexts - competition of vocabulary items, allomorphy: the Subset Principle and a hierarchy of grammatical features - homonymy vs. syncretism of forms - rules operating in the morphological component: impoverishment rules and fission
