Course objectives
The course presents documents of European material culture in the area of housing, hygiene, clothing, decoration and dining from the point of view of cultural history and cultural anthropology from the Middle Ages to the present day. It follows these artistic and other phenomena mainly in the urban community and, at the same time, it points out to the differences and mutual influencing between the higher classes of society and the rural community. As well as the evolution determined by the adaptation to natural and social conditions it focuses on changes in esthetics and perception of values in dependence on the living standards determined by the economic and political circumstances. It evaluates the lifestyle as a set of signs, which in the context of the social and cultural environment, are deciphered in the process of social perception crucial for respecting the social hierarchy.
