- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with elementary features of the traditional concept of Czech syntax. After completing the course, students will be able to use the acquired knowledge for the practical purpose of translating from foreign languages into Czech.
- Syllabus
- 1. Sentence and utterance; structure of a sentence as the elementary unit of the language system. 2. System possibilities for formation of correct Czech sentences. 3. Sentence elements. 4. Syntactic relationships (formal and semantic viewpoints). 5. Hierarchy of the sentence proposition. 6. Sentences with the meaning of necessity, possibility and intention. 7. Negative sentences. 8. Linking sentences. 9. Functional sentence perspective. 10. Communicative function of utterances. The seminar is focused on practical aspects of these topics, i.e. it will include practical exercises dealing with the individual topics. Students will learn to analyze Czech sentences and to apply the knowledge in the process of translation. Exercises in Czech punctuation will be included as well.

- Teaching methods
- The course has the form of practical exercises relating to the topics dealt with, combining teachers’ explanations and practical work of the students. Brief theoretical explanations are followed by prevailing collective work.
- Assessment methods
- Active and regular participation in the seminar (no more than 2 absences) is necessary to complete the course successfully; students’ knowledge will be checked by a final credit test.
