Course objectives
It takes a number of people and technologies before a film is made. Film is not only a collective work but also a complicated item, which takes about one year to „manufacture“ and currently costs around 30 mil. CZK. And the final product may not even be a perfect reflection of the director's or screenwriter's intentions. Then a long journey of cinema (or other) distribution follows.
The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with circumstances surrounding film production, both generally and on one particular example.
Syllabus
  • a) the history of film production / audiovisual industry in the Czech republic, legal framework, circumstances, institutions, terms.
  • 1. Authorship law, legal conditions for TV broadcast, Czech national TV law, Law on Cinematography (national funding), authorship organizations OSA, DILIA, Intergram, etc. Audiovisual Producers' Association (APA), Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA), Film and television association (FITES) etc.
  • 2. Film industry. The structures of public and private TV, methods of financing.
  • 3. Audiovisual work, its formats and methods of financing.
  • b) A practical guide how to make a film or an audiovisual work.
  • 4. Financing: producer, co-producer, investor, product placement etc. Production crew: writer, script editor, producer etc. Technologies.
  • 5. A filmmaking formula: the producer's contemplation, dramaturgical basis, outlining the possibilities, preparing the shoot and budget, shooting, postproduction, distribution.
  • 6. Case study: screenplay development, financing, production.

Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussion.
Assessment methods
Written assignment: each student will compose a project of a film production including a contemplation, subject, literary and technical screenplay, outline of technology of filming and postproduction, general budget and shooting schedule, as well as distribution strategy.
