Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: translate selected passages of Petronius' Satyricon;
comment on these passages both linguistically and stylistically;
find and explain Vulgar Latin phenomena used in the text;
discuss historical and literary context of Petronius' works;
describe literary devices used in the work.
Syllabus
  • Introduction - Satyricon in literary and historical context.
  • Personality of the author.
  • Reading and translation of selected passages of Petronius' work. Cena Trimalchionis.
  • Analysis of language.
  • Grecisms.
  • Vulgar Latin elements in Petronius' work. Vulgar Latin as a means to characterize protagonists.
  • Ways to express irony in Satyricon.
  • Metrical analysis.

Teaching methods
Lectures, reading, translation and commentary on text. Homework.
Assessment methods
Presence in the class (75%). Seminary work and presentation. Final test (translation of a sample of text, knowledge of metrical schemes used in the work).
