Course objectives
The course is conceived as a combination of reading and teaching. The main objectives of the course are the following: approach to the sociological way of thinking about reality, capability for orientation in principal sociological conceptions, concepts and paradigms, ability to operate with them and to formulate critical reflection about them.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introductory informational meeting
  • 2. Discussion in the intentions of the first reading text (P. Berger: Invitation to the sociology)
  • 3. What is sociology, constitution of the sociology as a science, sociological imagination (in the intentions of Berger's text again), founders of sociology (Comte, Tönnies, Spencer, Tocqueville)
  • 4. Classical sociological theory I (Marx, Durkheim)
  • 5. Classical sociological theory II (Weber, Simmel, psychologismus)
  • 6. Modern sociological discourses (sociology of knowledge, Habermas, Parsons, Mead etc.)
  • 7. Contemporary sociological theory I (Bourdieu, Berger and Luckmann, Bell)
  • 8. Contemporary sociological theory II (Foucault, Giddens, Bauman etc.)
  • 9. Reading week (Berger and Luckmann: Social construction of the reality)
  • 10. Excurcus into the sociological subdisciplines: 1. Sociology of culture, example of theories about sociological analysis of the musical taste
