Course objectives
The main objective of this course is to provide the students with a basic overview of the development of Egypt´s relations with the Near- Eastern states since Early Bronze Age until the end of Late Bronze Age. The course focuses on the ways of interaction between these regions that are reflected in material culture of the monitored period. Lectures should also provide an overview of development of contemporary historical sources related to particular regions in the monitored period.

  • 1. History of research 2. The origins of contacts 3. Initial expansion of Egypt into the Near East 4. Contacts during the Early Dynastic period and Old Kingdom 5. The first transitional period 6. Middle Kingdom – the so-called incantatory texts 7. The end of the Middle Kingdom and the emergence of the Hyksos 8. The second transitional period 9. Expansive policies of early 18th Dynasty and Thutmose III. 10. Amarna – the Age of Diplomacy 11. The Ramesside Expansion 12. End of the Egyptian empire and the Sea Peoples
