Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to:
Define the basic terms from the field of book culture
Explain the relations of individual approaches to book design, printing and distribution
Formulate conclusions on historical aspects of book making
Summarize findings from the field of typography and book design
Syllabus
  • 1) Gift of the divine Thovt - origins of scripture and text records, earliest literary findings, "materialization" of the memory, book in the middle ages
  • 2) Book as a labyrinth / book as its catalogue - origins of European culture
  • 3) Dawn of humanism, Guttenberg
  • 4) Book in transition of forms
  • 5) Importance of accesibility of books; Habermas
  • 6) Role of the book in the (post)modern society; popularization of reading (Benjamin)
  • 7) History of the publishing activity
