Course objectives
This course offers a brief introduction into the study of cultural representations in the Spanish speaking countries of North America. Students will have an understanding of the importance of the historical background, and all decisive circumstances that contributed to the creation of cultural legacies.
Syllabus
  • TOPICS: 1. INTRODUCTION. Identity and Culture. 2. HISTORICAL FOCUS. Native Americans and their encounter with the Europeans. La Maliche and "malinchism". 3. GREAT INDIGENOUS CULTURES. MEXICO I: Toltecs, Olmecs and Aztecs. 4. GREAT INDIGENOUS CULTURES. MEXICO II, GUATEMALA, SALVADOR, HONDURAS: Mayas. 5.THE MOVEMENT OF INDEPENDENCE: conflicts of the indigenous people with the dominant society,Zapatist movement. 6. CONTEMPORARY PERIOD: AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE NEW MILENIUM. Comandante Marcos, Comandanta Ramona. 7. SOCIOLOGICAL FOCUS. IN THE NAME OF THE STRUGGLE FOR EQUALITY. The figure of Rigoberta Menchú. 8. INDIGENOUS PEOPLE´S PERSPECTIVES. The coexistence in the western globalized world. 9. HOT CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS. Majority society. Criminality and violence. Los maras, los Zetas. 10. CULTURAL FOCUS.
