Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to discuss the continuity between the Ancient (mostly Latin, Roman) and Medieval literature (or literary culture) in a broader cultural context of the Middle Ages. Students will acquire the neccesary knowledge pertaining to the nature and the meaning of Medieval returns to Antiquity up to the phase of Renaissance Humanism.

  • Aurelius Augustinus - De civitate Dei, Confessiones, De doctrina christiana (in translations)
  • Boethius, Consolatio philosophiae (in translation)
  • Medieval schooling in the Early and Late Middle Ages
  • Significance of poetics and rhetorics
  • Classical texts in the medieval literature (authorities)
  • Authority of the Bible
  • Phenomenon of the humanism of the 12th century
  • Petrarch and the beginnings of the Italian humanism
  • Beginnings of humanism in Bohemia, the so-called protohumanism
